Sustainable Backyard Tour Preview

June 5, 2017

If you’ve never heard of the Sustainable Backyard Tour, this post is for you! This free tour of Saint Louis area gardens is another wonderful event that makes me love Saint Louis and all the creative and welcoming people that live here.

The seventh annual Sustainable Backyard Tour, focuses on just that: sustainability. Ok, well not just that. But it’s a main focus of every garden that is selected to be on the tour. The tour stops – there are a whopping 45! – feature varying types of sustainability including native plants, chickens, rain barrels, and even solar power. The handy guide indicates which gardens have which features, so you can plan your route based on what most interests you. And new this year, the organizers have also made a Google Map so you can easily plug your destinations into a route on your phone or other mapping device.

Our garden is stop #17 on the tour in the Shaw neighborhood, and #16 is only one block away from us, with many other stops nearby. We’ll feature our cutting garden, as well as plenty of natives and perennials. We’ll also have refreshments and some fun plants for sale!

There are plenty of other gardens I’d recommend checking out, including:

  • #24 Kitchen House Farm – provides produce for Kitchen House Coffee
  • #11-14 North City – this area has done amazing work with the Rainscaping Grants available, plus Crown Candy and the revamped Crown Square are right here
  • #41 Dogtown Farms – check out what hugelkultur means
  • #23 Horner Ave – focus on natives
  • #27 Alice Blue Co – fellow florist growing interesting herbs and perennials

The tour is Sunday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please register online so we can get an accurate sense of how many people are attending the event. Registering also automatically enters you into a drawing for prizes, and the ability to vote for the People’s Choice Yard Award.
